BWR Cycle Chemistry Evaluations

Plant chemistry is an integral contributor to BWR performance, operational excellence, and material condition. Long-term data evaluations are instrumental in developing an integrated approach to chemistry that supports plant goals and long-range commitments. During power operation, ionic impurities or corrosion products, that could accelerate corrosion or change plant thermal characteristics, enter systems, often resulting in system performance problems. Evaluating chemistry data related to plant operations assists personnel in adjusting chemistry control programs, reviewing long-term chemistry trends for adverse system performance, and optimizing chemistry control programs to support long-range goals.

For each BWR fuel cycle, cycle chemistry data are evaluated for IGSCC (intergranular stress corrosion cracking) mitigation, radiation field control, fuel reliability assurance, and significant events and transients. The data period evaluated typically covers the operating cycle for each plant, the shutdown for the subsequent refueling outage, and the startup from that refueling outage until steady state conditions are reached. A report is prepared for each plant cycle reviewed that documents plant chemistry performance in the areas of IGSCC mitigation, radiation field control, and fuel reliability assurance.
